FD rugger will play Div II

Tomu Sawada, a soon-to-be class of 2025 Father Duenas Memorial School graduate, signed his collegiate commitment letter last Friday with Cal Poly Humbolt to play Rugby. Sawada, an all-island rugby and football player with the FD Friars, will represent the Lumberjacks as a freshman later this year.

The Lumberjacks program is affiliated with the NCAA on the Division II level and is a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

“I connected with my new coach, coach Vincent Celotto, and he told me the team is a tight bonded group, and their brotherhood is strong. Those characteristics were something that is important to me, just like the brotherhood at FD. “

Aside from playing Rugby, Sawada said he will be studying Finance, which is also a strong program offered at Cal Poly Humbolt.

“I was doing my research and the school has a really good Finance program”, said Sawada. “This school is place I feel has the best fit for me to develop as a person, player, and student,” said Sawada.

Attending the ceremony were Anita Cruz (grandmother), Brianna Meno (mom), Eva Cruz (girlfriend), Lyo Sawada (brother), and Tetsu Sawada (dad).

Congrats, Tomu, and good luck this season. Go Lumberjacks!

Tomu Sawada is joined by his FD Friars rugby teammates at his signing to play college rugby.
