BOYS PRESEASON VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY NEXT WEEKEND

Eleven teams set to go!

PRESS RELEASE – The 2025 Guam Volleyball Federation (GVBF) Boys High School Preseason Volleyball Tournament is set to take place from March 14-16, 2025, at Father Duenas Memorial School. Organized by tournament directors Richard Borja, Joseph Aquino Jr., and Ray Mesngon, the event promises an exciting preview of the upcoming high school volleyball season.

The tournament serves as a valuable opportunity for teams to fine-tune their lineups and test players in different roles. Coaches will be able to experiment with rotations and evaluate team chemistry in a low-risk, high-reward environment. For players, the tournament offers a stage to showcase their talent ahead of the season while competing in a fun yet competitive atmosphere.

Beyond team preparations, the GVBF tournament aligns with the federation’s strategic focus on player development. With national team coaches in attendance, the event will serve as a scouting ground for potential junior and senior national team prospects as Guam looks ahead to upcoming regional competitions.

Additionally, the tournament is part of the GVBF’s initiative to cultivate a highly qualified and certified officiating pool. Since launching an Oceania Referee Certification course last July, the GVBF has been developing officials through local tournaments and IIAAG league matches. This event will serve as a platform to evaluate, certify, and recertify referees, further strengthening the quality of officiating on the island.

The tournament now features 11 teams, with reigning league champions Father Duenas Memorial School and George Washington High School leading their respective pools. The full lineup includes:

Pool A: Father Duenas Memorial School Friars, Southern High School Dolphins, Simon Sanchez High School Sharks, Notre Dame High School Royals, John F. Kennedy High School Islanders
Pool B: George Washington High School Geckos, Okkodo High School Bulldogs, Tiyan High School Titans, Harvest Christian Academy Eagles, St. John’s School Knights, Guam High School Panthers

Matches will be played at both The Phoenix Center and The Jungle, culminating in a single-elimination playoff following the final round of pool play.

Ashley Samaniego and the UCLA Bruins made it to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, before losing to eventual champions UConn.
The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
