RAYNE MAYO JR COMMITS TO UC DAVIS

California football star Mayo set to be an Aggie

By Carmen Gogue

Rayne Mayo Jr. is a California football star with Guam ties who is putting the island on the map in the world of Division I collegiate football.

Mayo Jr. finished off his senior season with an astonishing 14 official athletic scholarship offers.

His offers spanned from three distinguished military academies; West Point, Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy to Ivy League schools Columbia and Cornell. It doesn’t stop there as Rayne also received offers from big-time collegiate programs at Colgate, Idaho, Utah State, Portland State and Weber State.

In the end, he chose to stay close to home in California to play in front of his family at the University of California, Davis. He joins the Aggies as a defensive lineman commit and will major in Sports Medicine.

Rayne believes his work ethic will set him apart from other freshman commits. “I’ve always been a hard worker and goal oriented. There’s going to be plenty of other kids with similar goals and different backgrounds but I’m hoping in the long run I make a name for myself, my family, and my culture,” said Mayor Jr.

Rising Star

Rayne started playing football at the young age of six years old. A majority of his youth sports were played at Evergreen PAL and Milpitas. Following his eighth grade promotion, Mayo Jr. entered Valley Christian High School in the fall of 2020.

As a sophomore, Rayne was a stellar 6’3″, 300-lb. rising football star that season earning a spot on the list as one of the California All-State Players and Second Team ALL WCAL (The West Catholic Athletic League) notably the second toughest league in the state.

Junior year captivated his leadership qualities as he was elected by his teammates to become team captain, a position traditionally held by seniors. He earned First Team ALL-WCAL and Most Valuable Player by his coaches and teammates.

Senior season locked in Rayne as a true football accolade earning various awards such as WCAL Defensive Lineman of the Year, First Team ALL WCAL, and California All-State.

Guam roots: Rayne Mayo, Jr. (57) and Aaron Knapp (12) played against each other this past season. (L-R): Brandon Knapp, Aaron Knapp, Rayne Mayo, Jr. and Rayne Mayo.

Guam Ties

Rayne Mayo Jr. is the grandson of Raymond Ramirez Mayo from Barrigada and Rita Atoigue Mayo from Ordot. His grandparents were born, raised and married on Guam.

His parents are Rayne and Caroline Mayo. Rayne is the youngest of four siblings and comes from a family of athletes with his dad [Rayne Mayo] playing football at San Francisco State University from 1991-1994, and two older siblings playing collegiate sports.

“My motivation comes from my family. I’m the first child to really venture out away from my family and siblings. I’m hoping to leave a legacy at Davis that puts my family on the map.”

– Rayne Mayo Jr.

Rayne provides gratitude to his father and uncle for his standing in the sport, “I would like to thank my pops and Uncle Moki, who got me to play football and have provided me with so much knowledge and resources over the years. I’m not the man who I am today without them.”

As he attends UC Davis this coming fall 2024, Rayne highlights that his ultimate goal is to play beyond just the collegiate level in the future.

NOTES: Rayne’s other uncle – Raynard Mayo – is a teacher at Guam High; there is one other player on the Valley Christian High team with Guam ties – Champ Cruz Taulealea.
