HIGH SCHOOL PADDLING HITS THE WAVES IN THIRD RACE WEEKEND

Paddlers cruise in Tumon swells

By Carmen Gogue

Matapang beach in Tumon was filled once again with spectators as Guam’s high school paddling teams prepared for their races of the morning.

Used to the early schedules and clear sunny skies, the paddlers were ready to take on the Tumon currents in their third weekend of GKCF Kareran Galaide Races.

Finishing top overall for the 2 mile races were the Father Duenas Friars (Manhoben Lalahi). In the Manhoben Dinana (mixed) division, the Sanchez Sharks were victorious over their opposing teams. The Notre Dame Royals were in sync and found their stroke to take the top spot in the Manhoben Famalao’an (female).

In the 3 mile races, the John F. Kennedy Islanders swept all three divisions: Sottera (female), Sottero Dinana (mixed), and Sotteru (male).

With the completion of this weekend’s races, there will only be one more race weekend to determine the regular season division champions.

As the regular season ends, the paddlers will head into the SPPC Circle K/76 Kareran Galaide Mini-Distance Championships on May 4 and the SPPC Circle K/76 Kareran Galaide Sprint Championships on May 18.

Ashley Samaniego and the UCLA Bruins made it to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, before losing to eventual champions UConn.
The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
