G-LEAGUE OPENING WEEKEND DELIVERS

Three shutouts in five matches

PRESS RELEASE – Three shutouts in five matches were featured in the opening weekend of the Bud Light G-League Women at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

Bank of Guam Strykers FC’s Sarah Benavente scored the new league’s first-ever goal and teammate Hayden Thompson added another in their team’s 2-0 win over Sidekick SC Saturday afternoon.

In the second match of Saturday’s double header, NAPA Rovers FC defeated Tumon Typhoons FC 3-0 with one goal each from Annie Jones, Cadance Mansapit, and Monica Marquez.

In Sunday’s triple header, Guam Shipyard Women played to a 5-3 victory over Heavy Hitters/Nutrition Mission Southern Heat in the day’s 12-noon scorcher.

Hinengi San Nicolas currently leads the Golden Boot race with four goals scored for Guam Shipyard and teammate Maya Iriarte also scored in the win. Taylor Camin scored twice for the Heat and teammate Sophia Unpingco also scored.

Bank of Guam Strykers B shut out Tumon FC UOG 2-0 with goals from Natalie Mortera and Breanna Flores for the weekend’s third shutout match.

In the final match of opening weekend, the Islanders FC played to a 1-1 draw with Guam Shipyard Women II. Connica “Lola” Baza scored for the Islanders and Guam Shipyard Women II’s goal came on an Islanders own goal.

The women’s league takes a week break for the opening weekend of the Budweiser G-League beginning Jan. 27. 

In Feb. 3’s matches, Guam Shipyard Women II will take on NAPA Rovers FC II at 2 p.m. followed by Guam Shipyard Women taking on NAPA Rovers FC at 4 p.m.

The following day, Bank of Guam Strykers FC will play against the Tumon Typhoons FC at 12 noon, followed by Sidekick SC against Heavy Hitters/Nutrition Mission Southern Heat at 2 p.m. In the day’s last match, Tumon FC UOG will play against the Islanders FC.

The Bud Light G-League Women is Guam’s new top-flight domestic league for women, replacing the previous Bud Light Women’s Soccer League. The league features 11 teams and will be played in three rounds before a double elimination playoff later in the year to determine the inaugural champion.

The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
