FRIARS TAKE DOWN KNIGHTS IN STRAIGHT SETS

Friars enter second round of play on high note against Knights

By Carmen Gogue

As the second round of regular season play set off for the IIAAG Boys Volleyball League, the Father Duenas Friars had an uplifting start defeating the St. John’s Knights in straight sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 Friday evening at the upper Tumon school’s gym.

David Del Carmen and Hoben Barcinas each recorded eight kills to lead FD’s attacks. Teammate Saul Bamba trailed right behind with seven recorded kills.

Challenging the Knights in the season opener just a few weeks ago, the Friars won the first match in four sets 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17. Del Carmen recounts the first matchup against St. John’s and the difference in performance for his team tonight, “We improved more since the last time we challenged them, our team did a really great job tonight”.

All three sets featured a fast-paced level of play from both teams. The young St. John’s team kept up with the seasoned defending champions with strong attacks from Knathan Davis, Jerrick Palomares, and Harry Vitale but unfortunately fell short of a win each set.

Bamba highlights what worked best for the Friars tonight, “Our defense and our blocking. Setting up the block and closing it was everything”.

FD will head down to Talofofo to play the Notre Dame Royals for a well anticipated rematch on April 23 starting at 5:30 for the junior varsity game and varsity following after. The SJS Knights will travel to Guam High for their next game on the same day April 23 at 6:00 pm.

The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
