TSUNAMI SWIM CLUB COMPETES IN JAPAN

Back in competitive waters

After nearly three years out of competition, the Tsunami Swim Club was glad to be back in competitive waters, recently competing in Japan.

Former Guam swimmer Ken Barcinas, now the coach of the club, took 13 swimmers ranging in ages of 8-18 to two meets in Shizuoka, Japan

This trip’s main focus was more about the swimmers being exposed to the training environment and competing outside of Guam so they can feel and have awareness of the amount of time, effort and discipline needed in and out of the water in order to get to the next level.

Three swimmers medaled and eight of the 13 swimmers were able to apply what they learned and placed top 8 in their events.

Risa Hendrix, Leon Park and Cassey Kobayashi medaled for Tsunami.

“We are grateful for Shizuoka’s Swimming & Tokoha Swim School for the hospitality, privilege and opportunity they offered to our swimmers from this training camp/comp. It was great to reconnect with Tokoha Swim School who we had exchange students and homestay programs set up prior to the pandemic,” said club representative Eveline Campus. “We look forward to more opportunities and to revive the focus on swimming as a competitive sport in Guam.”

Ashley Samaniego and the UCLA Bruins made it to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, before losing to eventual champions UConn.
The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
