3×3 HOOPS REPEAT AS GOLDEN BOYS

Guam edges Fiji to win back-to-back Pacific Games gold

Guam Men’s Basketball held court and defending its gold medal in the Pacific Games, edging out Fiji 19-18 in the gold medal game of the men’s 3×3 basketball event Saturday afternoon in the Solomon Islands.

The team of Ben Borja, Michael Sakazaki, Reo Aiken and Mark Johnson redeemed Guam’s loss to Fiji last weekend in a heart-breaking loss to Fiji in the 5×5 gold medal match.

3×3 Basketball made its debut in the 2019 Pacific Games and Guam has won both. Borja and Sakazaki are returning members from that squad. The other two were AJ Carlos and Seve Susuico. That team is fondly remembered as ‘Seve’s Angels’.

Cool Note: Mark Johnson’s dad used to work with Seve Susuico’s mom. Growing up, Johnson used to live in the house Susuico is currently living in.

Ashley Samaniego and the UCLA Bruins made it to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, before losing to eventual champions UConn.
The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
