
PRESS RELEASE – The UOG Tritons and the Guam Junior Nationals tied 5-5 in their round-robin game at George Washington High School Baseball Field on Sunday afternoon in the UOG Baseball Classic in the 2nd game of a doubleheader. The Braves beat the Cardinals 9-5 in the opening game.
Round robin games are 7 innings with 2.5 hour time limit and games in round robin play can end a tie.
The Tritons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning as UOG’s Dominic Pangelinan was dominate on the mound for the Tritons in the first 3 innings of the game while Nolan Cruz had a shaky start for Junior Nationals.
But the Junior Nationals scored 2 rules in the top of the 4th inning, but UOG answered back with 1 run in the bottom of the inning to lead 4-2 at the end of four innings. The Tritons added another run in the 5th and was up 5-2 going into the 6th inning.
The Junior Nationals’ John Salas would double with 1 out in the top of 6th and would score later on a misplay by the Tritons. UOG did not score in their half of the inning and had a 5-3 lead going into the top of the 7th.
With one out in the top of the 7th, Guaifon Terlaje would triple to the right field line and Ricardo Leon Guerrero would follow with a double to the same place on the next at bat to make the game 5-4. Pangelinan got the 2nd out of the inning on a ground out, but the pitcher threw the ball away at 3rd base attempting to catch Leon Guerrero off the base. The error tied the game at 5-5.
Arren Yartar would retire in the Tritons with 3 strikeouts in the bottom of the 7th and the game ended in a tie.
Dominic Pangelinan got the tie for the Tritons, pitching all 7 innings with 12 strikeouts on the day. He gave up 8 hits and allowed 2 walks. Only 2 of the 5 runs he gave up were earned. Nolan Cruz started the game for the Junior Nationals, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks. He struck out 7 Tritons in his four innings. Arren Yatar pitched the final 3 innings for the Nats, giving up 1 run on no hits, with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. His lone run was unearned.
John Salas went 2-3 for the Junior Nationals with a double. Guaifon Terlaje had a triple and Ricardo Leon Guerrero had a double. The Tritons had no hitters with multiple hits or an extra base hit.
Both the Tritons and Junior Nationals are 1-0-1 in the tournament.
In the opening game of the day, the Braves defeated the Cardinals 9-5. The Braves jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the first 3 innings of the game and would hold off a late comeback by the Cardinals.
