TENNIS DOUBLES, GERARDO TAKE BRONZE

bronze medals earned on Friday

Camden Camacho and Aarman Sachdev won the bronze in the men’s doubles for tennis. It’s been over 20 years since Guam has medaled in Tennis at the Pacific Games or Mini Pacific Games so the medal was quite an accomplishment. Camacho and Sachdev won 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 to get on the podium.

Guam took home the first set 7-5 and were tied 3-3 in the second set against team Fiji composed of players Sebastian Tikaram and William O’Connell. After Fiji went ahead 4-3, Guam tied it up at 4-4.

Fiji finished the second set strong and capitalized on miscues by the younger Guam team and won the second set 6-4.

In the final sudden death set, Fiji had momentum on their side and took an early lead. Camacho dished out hard serves and the advantage was on Guam’s behalf.

Sachdev kept his composure and returned a beautiful forehand to give Guam match point. Camacho finished of the job with good defense and history was made!

Gerardo wins hammer throw bronze

Genie Gerardo won the first medal for athletics with a throw of 30.77 meters. Gerardo, who broke her own shotput Guam National record at the games, was third behind a pair of Autralian throwers.
