2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS OVERVIEW SO FAR

Four of five Guam athletes have completed their events in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics! Here’s a brief recap of what happened so far.

Judo
Joshter Andrew (81 kg) was eliminated in the Round of 64 by TJK’s Akmal Murodov

Swimming
100m freestyle – Jagger Stephens finished 2nd in his heat with a 52.72, but didn’t advance to the semifinals featuring the top 16.

100m freestyle – Mineri Gomez finished 6th in her heat with a 1:05.11 and didn’t advance to the semifinals featuring the top 16.

Athletics
100m sprint – Regine Tugade sets a new best with a 12.17 (beating her 12.26 best) and finished 4th in her heat, just missing the chance to advance to the next round.

Softball
Chamorrita Madilyn ‘Bubba’ Nickles wins Silver with Team USA!

Weightlifting
The Philippines got their first ever gold medal through Hidilyn Diaz, who is coached by Guam’s own Julius Naranjo.

The FD Rugby Team head to Virginia to participate in the 14th Gonzaga Rugby Classic on April 12-13. Good luck boys.

Ashley Samaniego and the UCLA Bruins made it to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, before losing to eventual champions UConn.
The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
