Saturday was the last week of the regular season in The Budweiser Guahan Varsity Football League. The Eagles started off the morning with a big win over the Cowboys 40-10 with the Raiders and Outlaws closing out the afternoon. Reeling from a tough loss last week to their rival Eagles, The Raiders looked to ride into the postseason with a win.
Meanwhile their opponent the Outlaws, finally found their first victory of the season after beating the Cowboys by two points last week. The Outlaws however, wouldn’t have the same luck as before. Raiders powered through playing the usual rough and tumble offense and it pays off in a 30-0 win.
RAIDERS ROLL
The Raiders wasted no time on offense to begin the game. Led by veteran quarterback Danny Manibusan, the silver and blue were excellent in the ground game. The Raiders opening drive spanned 70 year’s and ate up much of the first quarter.
On first and ten from Outlaw territory, Manibusan gave the ball to former GW Gecko Hank “The Tank” Sablan and #4 did the rest Sablan’s first run of the game was good for a Raiders first, a run that would set the tone for the rest of the game. Contributions from Brandon Burgos and Damon Hocog, set Sablan up for a great day on the ground.
Manibusan then hit Storm Rosario on the opening drive for a great catch and even bigger gain. Rosario was shoved out as soon as he came down with it, but the damage was done and it set up the first raiders touchdown. Working from the red zone, Manibusan handed off to Sablan and Hank The Tank powered through to put the Raiders on the board first.
In true Raider fashion, the offense stayed on the field for the 2-point conversion, which was kept by the QB himself and called good. The Raiders led 8-0 after their first drive and never looked back.
The Outlaws were short-handed and it showed. They offense struggled to gain momentum at any point as it was Justin “Shocker” Cruz under center, not Kobe Quimbao, who was assuming running back duties.
Cruz was able to get decent protection from his o-line but the tough Raiders secondary tandem of Ryan Biggler and Casey Cruz were too much. Outlaws were outmanned and out ran in the middle resulting in a costly second-half Interception by Casey Cruz which all but cemented to victory for the Raiders. 30-0 the final.
Part two of this matchup will resume next week as The Outlaws open the postseason against the Raiders.
