SHARKS EARN SEPTEMBER TEAM OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to the Sanchez Sharks boys cross country team for earning the National Guard Team of the Month Award for the month of September!

The Sharks went unbeaten in their 2015 season, a perfect 9-0, earning monumental wins over power house teams like the defending champion JFK Islanders, the Guam High Panthers and Okkodo Bulldogs.

The award was presented to the Sharks at their home gym Wednesday morning, September 30th.

FINALISTS

The Sharks aren’t the only unbeaten team in the first quarter with the likes of the FD Friars, GW Geckos, and JFK girls cross country team also going unbeaten in September. But unlike the Sharks, the top two teams and football and fastest girls of Guam were in many ways expected.

The Sharks turned in a pleasant surprise accomplishing things that haven’t been done in over a decade. Here are a list of the other teams who were in the running.Guam National Guard logo

FD Friars Football – A perfect 6-0 record while only allowing two offensive touchdowns all season was the recipe for a Team of the Month honors. The ‘Maroon Wall’ is the most well rounded defense in the league and the boys are primed to bounce back from losing the finals in 2014 to the GW Geckos.

GW Geckos Football – Likewise 6-0, the defending champion GW Geckos are back on top form and aim to repeat. With grind to wins over the Islanders, the Geckos have proven to figure out the ways to win under the toughest circumstances. The Friars and Geckos will link up Friday to settle the last of the unbeaten teams.

JFK Islanders Cross Country (Girls)  – The speedy JFK Islander ladies are determined to repeat as champions. With speedster Mariah Ollet leading the way, the Islanders haven’t tasted defeat in over two years.

Ashley Samaniego and the UCLA Bruins made it to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, before losing to eventual champions UConn.
The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
