NEW LOOK CHAMPION SHARKS

The two-time defending champion Sanchez Sharks are welcoming a wave of new players though the team is still focused on playing their style of football.

The Sanchez Sharks proved that an efficient running game complimented by a speedy defense was more than enough to take the 2012 and 2013, both over the GW Geckos.

The hard-to-stop wishbone running scheme behind head coach Jimmy Nahalowaa featured two prolific runners in Dondre Barnes and Daniel Cruz, but the Sharks are going to be playing without the two instant impact players leaving the offense in the hands of quarterback Devin Leon and offensive threat Tre Leon.

“Our approach isn’t too different. We’re always going to start from our offensive line and build from there. If we get a line going then we would be able to throw new backs in there and it’s not too big of a change,” said coach Paul Unger, after the ever elusive Nahalowaa again successfully dodged an interview.

Along with losing their backfield, starting quarterback Shawn Dumanal and safety Wes Shiroma have graduated leaving the 2014 Sharks vacant for new star roles.

Fueling the defense is key All Island returnee Matt Sojo, who has been a constant selectee thanks to his rare ability to play on the offensive line while also make just as big of plays as an All Island linebacker on defense.

The Sharks have a championship pedigree after successfully defending for two straight years, but they too have put those seasons behind them and don’t stress the fact that they won back-to-back titles.

“We haven’t focused on that a whole lot, especially since we have a bunch of new guys,” said Unger on the pressure of being a title defender.

The Shark newcomers and handful of veterans will have be facing off against a revamped Southern Dolphins squad down south on Saturday at 3 pm.
