Guam’s Men’s Rugby Team took another step forward with a big 48-10 win over Laos in the Asian 5 Union Division III East semifinals Friday night in Laos.

Guam (ranked 88th in the world) will now face China (#68) Saturday night in the finals of the Division III East bracket. A win over China would push Guam into the world’s Division II bracket. The top teams in the world occupy the Division I and Top 5 brackets.

Guam came out fast and furious, jumping out to a quick 22-0 lead just minutes into the match.

Chris Sgro scored the first try followed by Rob Leon Guerrero, Paul Claros and Art Toves.

Alex Tenorio scored twice while Eddie Calvo and Paul Estaquio made a few extra point conversions as well to give Guam the win

According to team member Matt Sgro, Guam definitely made their dominance on defense with a smothering style over the host team.

Guam’s front 3 made a statement in the scrums and running game with Brandon O’Mallan, Tenorio and Johnny Borja leading the charge.

Matt Sablan and Eddie Calvo took the leadership roles for the fast pace back line. Guam’s impact players off the bench also made a statement with hard runs by Jacob Flores and Ezra Sablan.

Guam fell short of the Division III East title last year, falling to Quatar in the finals 13-7 in Malaysia.

Team Guam will now face China in the finals Saturday night in Laos at 9 pm Chamorro Standard Time. You can follow “Asian 5 Nations Division 3 East” on Twitter for minute-by-minute play.
