It was a safety that propelled the Angels to the championship game of the Metgot division of the GNYFF youth football league. The Angels slipped away with a 2-0 win over the Saints in their semifinal bout Sunday afternoon at the UOG field.

It was a battle of the defenses. Both team’s offenses were unable to gain any kind of momentum because of the others’ stiff defense as the only rhythm of the game was a loss of yardage and a punt at fourth down.

Midway through the third quarter the Angels pushed the Saints deep in their own territory. Down at the three-yard line, the Saints were forced into a punt situation.

Angels’ Jaythan Lujan jumped and blocked the punt, leaving the ball to roll into the end zone. Thinking that the play was over, the players began to reset. Coaches were yelling, “Get the ball! Get the ball!” and realizing that the ball was live, the Saints picked up the ball in the end zone; the Angels tapped him and the safety was called.

Later in the fourth quarter, Saints Ronevin Chaco pick up an Angels fumble and returned it for what would have been a 75-yard touchdown run; however, the play was called back due to illegal blocking.

The Saints turned the ball over on downs and it was the  Angels ball. The Angels ended up in a fourth down situation and punted the ball back to the Saints. Though a high kick, the ball ended up five yards from the spot of the kick, landing in a crowd of players. A Saints player touched the ball as is bounced and the Angels recovered.

Still unable to get past the Saints defense, the ball was turned over once again. The Angels gained possession right back when safety Tobee Franquez intercepted a pass with less than two minutes left on the clock.

The Angels unable to produce on offense and the Saints were given their opportunity with 37 seconds left on the clock. After two incomplete passes and a first down conversion, Saints Matua Borja caught a short pass in the last play, and began to run wide around the defense, however he was swarmed with Angel defenders and the final whistle was blown.

The Angels will move on to play the Jets in the championship game.
