Sydney Martin, the daughter of former longtime Guam residents Richard and Virginia Martin, recently helped her Little League all-star softball team win the Florida State 9-10 championship.

Sydney was the winning pitcher in the championship game, held July 22 in Orlando. From there, her team competed in and won the Southeast Region Tournament of State Champions in Luray, Va. In that tournament, Sydney pitched in all five of her team’s victories, allowing no runs in 12 innings of work.

Her parents are 1985 graduates of John F. Kennedy High School and 1989 and 1990 graduates of the University of Guam. Richard also was sports editor of the Pacific Daily News from 1989-92.

After leading a cast of sports journalists such as Eddie Siguenza, Ron Ige, Jojo Santo Tomas and Patrick Lujan, Richard moved on to work for newspapers in Melbourne, Fla., Salinas, Calif., Seattle, Wash., and is currently an editor at the Tampa Bay Times.
