Championship Weekend

  • The Sanchez Sharks made it back-to-back championships with a shutout over the GW Geckos 20-0.  Quarterback Shawn Dumanal has led the Sharks on offense the past two seasons. He threw for a 15-yard touchdown to Trey Leon, ran for a 22-yard gain and converted a two-point conversion on a pass to Derrick Evangelista. The Shark defense allowed the Gecko offense only one trip to the red zone. The Sharks were able to finish off the Geckos twice and that is unfortunately what the Panthers could not do two years in a row.

    Sharks quarterback Shawn Dumanal saved his season’s best performance for the one that mattered most against the Geckos in the championship game.

  • Friday started with the 3rd place game between the Guam High Panthers versus the Okkodo Bulldogs. The game was over by halftime as the Panthers raced to a 24-0 lead. Tegan Brown had a final game to remember with 215 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Panthers quarterback LJ Aguon added two touchdowns and had 118 yards on six carries. MVP Juwon Jacobs added 193 yards and a score on 15 attempts. Juwan King added a 25 yards toss to Aguon. The Panthers finished with over 500 yards by overwhelming Okkodo 36-0.
  • Guam was denied a second championship matchup between the Panthers and Sharks. There will be no rematch as the Panthers and Friars will play separate exhibitions games against a team from Singapore. Shawn Dumanal and Daniel Cruz will lead their Shark’s baseball team starting Monday to repeat as champions.
  • Defensive Player of the Week – Shawn Dumanal-Safety-Simon Sanchez- Big interception by two way player stopped the Geckos last chance to score in red zone.
  • Offensive Player of The Week -Daniel Cruz-Sanchez-Utility- The unofficial MVP of the post season. Returned a 90 yard kickoff return and rushed for an 11 yard touchdown.

Class 2014 Rankings

Rivals.com does not rank Guam. So I figured why not give it a try. Here are my top six seniors.

  • Daniel Cruz- Simon Sanchez-Came out of nowhere to have the best performances in October. Plays RB, KR, and PR and led the island in rushing. He is also a good baseball player. He is interested in walking on to play football or baseball at a college in Texas, Hawaii, or California.

  • Tegan Brown-Guam High– A solid player for the Panthers all four years. He has a strong desire to play Division I and could if given a chance. May have to walk on or go the service academy route. His college interests are the Naval Academy, University of Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota.
  • LJ Aguon-Guam High– Another player who wants to head off island. Led the island in passing yards and has shown ability to scramble. He plays cornerback also and can play receiver when called upon. Aguon projects as a Division 3 player who could contribute with his skill set.
  • Juwon Jacobs-Guam High– The fastest player on the island, showed his skill set in scoring on runs, catches, and returns. Will need to get bigger, faster, and stronger to contribute at next level. His college choices are the US Naval Academy and Golden West College.
  • Justin Santos- Okkodo High– Santos is the best football player to come out of Okkodo High School. Can the 205-lb linebacker be the first Okkodo football player to compete in college? Wants to test his skill level off island.
  • Dondre Barnes- Simon Sanchez– Last year’s championship MVP battled injuries and lack of playing time this season. He still managed to get second team All-Island running back. He has relocated to Illinois and is interested in walking on to Riverside Community College in California.

Off Island Report

  • Another Matthew Eaton update: Pascagoula (8-1) and #3 in 5A Mississippi. Eaton has four offers total: Appalachian State, Youngstown State, Navy, and Louisiana Monroe.
