A couple of football’s oldest rivals faced yet again in the IIAAG season. Victory was in the grasps of JFK’s hands, but the Geckos came out with a late clutch run to seal the game. The GW Geckos finished the game with a thrilling 19-14 win over the JFK Islanders at the JFK field.

“It was our blocking. Some of our runners had good runs and some of them attacked the holes that were open,” said the Geckos’ Kelvin Hocug about what he thought helped his team with tonight’s game.

Penalties kept hurting the Geckos but they delivered in the clutch.

With only 40 seconds left in the game, the JFK Isalnders were flagged with a defensive penalty that brought the Geckos to the Islander 40. Geckos Quarterback Brandon Santos hit receiver Anselmo Untalan for a 40-yard bomb that was the dagger of the game.

“All we could pass because the pressure made it seem long to hit. When I got the ball I just did what I could do and help get the win. It feels really good. I really wanted to do was to get the last score and help my team win the game,” said Untalan about the clutch TD he got late in the game.

JFK tried their best at the 20-second mark to get the ball forward but it just not connecting. The passes were either too long or the defense was just too much. The whistle finally was blown and marked the ending of the game.

The GW Geckos got things started by getting 56 yards after receiving the ball at kickoff by Brandon San Agustin. After, San Agustin took a handoff by quarterback Hank Sablan and scored the first touchdown of the game. With the completed 1 point PAT by Tevin Sanots, GW took the early 7-0 lead just two-minutes into the game.

When the 2nd quarter commenced, the Islanders didn’t want to disappoint the home crowd, so they started off big by getting seven quick yards to get the crowd into the game. Islander’s quarterback Quintin Iriarte tossed a 28-yard pass to receiver Kurtis Silva for the Islanders first touchdown, tying the game with a PAT at seven at midway through the second quarter.

JFK came back with another touchdown after recovering a fumble the Geckos. Iriarte hit teammate Wayne Jesus for a 60-yard  touchdown with the completed PAT, but GW quickly responded. Hocug retrieved the ball after a punt at 20-yard line and sprinted his way through the other side of the fielding avoiding JFK defense on his way to an 80-yard run touchdown. However, JFK blocked the PAT and maintained a 14-13 lead heading to halftime.

Coming out of halftime, the Geckos would bury themselves in an almost unescapable hole. Instead of getting yards, they just got penalties, which kept pushing them back and giving the Islanders the advantage. But those penalties didn’t stop them.

The Gecko secondary were able to deflect passes while getting a game changing interception.

“We need to work a lot on our offense and defense. We are really going to work hard against who we challenge next game,” said Untalan about what to work on for next game.

What supposed to be a happy night for the JFK Islanders who were celebrating their homecoming at the JFK field with different festivities, the GW Geckos just came and spoiled and took it away.

The Geckos improve to 3-2 and the Islanders fall to 2-3
