It was a rematch of last season’s championship as the JFK Islanders squared off against the Southern Dolphins Wednesday afternoon at JFK field in girls high school softball. In this highly anticipated match up both teams came in with undefeated records, but Southern was able to pull off another late rally to get the victory over JFK 5-2.
With the score tied 2-2 at the top of the fifth the Dolphins offense came alive after a strong RBI triple from Larayn Leon Guerrero. In the ensuing play Misty Santos would sacrifice an out which brought in Leon Guerrero making the score 3-2.
The Islanders almost pulled off a comeback at the bottom of the fifth as Loyola Rivera hit a RBI double; however the Dolphins defense was quick to react tagging out both Rivera and Hiromi Atem in an impressive double play. Defense was the story of the game as both teams were unable to score for the first five innings.
McDonald’s player of the game: Dolphins’ Shannon Reyes. 5 K’s, RBI Single, RBI Double
With the momentum in their hands, Southern would feed off of Shannon Reyes as she hit an RBI single deep into left field at the bottom of the fifth. The next play Reyes would steal third base, as Islander pitcher Audrey George would walk Maryjo Mafnas. Tamisha Fejeran brought in both Reyes and Mafnas after hitting a RBI double herself putting the Dolphins ahead 5-2.
Reyes scored at the top of the first inning for the Dolphins. Leon Guerrero would later touch home plate after an error made by the defense, giving the Dolphins the 2-0 at the bottom of the first.
“We are not taking any teams lightly, every game is a challenge,” said Reyes who took over pitching duties in the bottom of the second. “I feel like I finally got it back,” added Reyes about her pitching, as she threw five K’s in the game. George threw six K’s for the Islanders. The Dolphins improve to 4-0 while the Islanders fall to 3-1.
