Coming off of their first loss in two seasons, the Southern High Dolphins rebounded with a win over the Simon Sanchez Sharks 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Okkodo field in IIAAG high school girls softball action.

The Sharks started out strong in the first inning behind two straight Ks from pitcher Mykayla Edward making a quick defensive stop at the top of the first inning.

Sanchez would build on the momentum and be the first to score as Dionade Taitingfong stole home off of an error made by the Southern defense putting the Sharks up 1-0. The very next play Amy Besagar hit a RBI single into right field on allowing Edelene Cruz to score making the score 2-0 at the bottom of the first.

Things were looking good for the Sharks, but the Dolphins proved once again why they are the defending champs. Southern began to rally back into the game by confusing the Sharks defense with a bunt from Sasha Dirige at the top of the fourth inning that allowed teammate Liberty Tajalle to score cutting the Shark’s lead 3-1 at the top of the fourth.

“We just wanted to challenge and confuse their defense, because they are a really tough team,” said Misty Santos who came up big for the Dolphins hitting a crucial RBI single at the top of the fifth to make the score 4-2.

Southern began to pick apart the Sanchez defense at the top of the fifth as Santos stole home off of an error made by the defense to tie things up at 4-4. “They played hard and were motivated, luckily we were able to pull through,” said Santos. The Dolphins would seal the deal shutting the Sharks down at the bottom of the sixth with three quick outs.

With the win Southern improves 7-1 maintaining first place, and the Sharks now have a record of 5-4.
