Despite a weeks delay, the Budweiser Football league begins it’s third season running this weekend with five teams ready to go.
The league started out in 2011, with only four teams; the Angels, Eagles, Raiders, and Ravens.
League President Angel Calugay said, “Things are looking good. There is more participation this season.”
“We were actually working on opening up a sixth team, but it looks like we’re going to hold off until next year. Six teams would top off our league so that teams won’t have any byes.”
Teams will play in a double-round robin format, in which they will play each other twice. There will not be any playoffs this year, but if time permits an All-Star game will cap off the season.
League Teams
The Raiders
Head Coach: Rich Cotellesse
Last season’s champs earned their title after going undefeated all season long with quarterback Will Williams at the helm. There weren’t any playoffs last year, so an undefeated record was good enough for the title. Going without Williams this season, the Raiders will turn to Danny Manibusan to lead the offense with Alex Azcaraga and Sandy Fejeran at the receiving ends.
The Angels
Head Coach: Mike Willis
The league’s inaugural champs, look to take back the title. The team’s two losses last season came from their rival, the Raiders. In the leagues opening season, the Angels defeated the Raiders in the championship game. The Angels will be led by quarterback Stephen “SP” Phillips, and veterans Mike Pangelinan and Alan Blend.
The Eagles
Head Coach: Angel Calugay
The Eagles are steadily moving up the ladder, nearly taking home a win against the Angels in the last game of the 2012 season. Wide receiver Reginal Baylor will once again take the field for the Eagles in hopes of a championship season.
The Islanders
Head Coach: Frank Fejeran
The Islanders made their debut last season behind the likes of 2010 Simon Sanchez graduate Jeric Abisia. Though their only wins came from the Steelers, the Islanders have a way of surprising teams, proving to be tough opponents and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Ben Cruz is another talent out of JFK that will be making an impact in the league.
The Steelers
Head Coach: Todd Gillan
Unable to get a win all season, the young team is still a force to be reckoned with. Catching teams off guard is their specialty, scoring touchdowns even in the last seconds of the game. Though the Steelers aren’t as experienced as the other teams, they play to the final blow of the whistle. Deadly on both sides of the ball, Thomas Medler another 2010 Simon Sanchez graduate graces the Steelers team with his talent.
If you’d like to play in the BFL league, the Steelers and the Islanders still have open rosters. For more information contact league president Angel Calugay at 486-4609.
