PRESS RELEASE – The unseeded Father Duenas Memorial School sophomore Joshua Cepeda upset top seeds en route to the championship title in the 5.0 division of the ASC Family Tennis Classic, but he’s not done yet.
Cepeda still will compete in this weekend’s high school doubles event with partner Andrew Chung, the men’s 4.5 doubles with partner Anthony John and the men’s 5.0 doubles with partner Brian Tuncap. He additionally has entered the junior division’s singles and doubles events of the tournament to earn USTA ranking points beginning May 3. In the tournament’s final weekend, Cepeda will play in the mixed doubles division.
“It has been a good, tough tournament so far,” Cepeda said. “All of my opponents played with heart and passion. I really would like to thank ASC Trust Corporation for sponsoring this tournament to help us move on to compete at even higher levels. I look forward to my upcoming matches.”
After defeating Tom Park 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 in the Round of 16, Cepeda moved on to upset division top seed Khay Sung 6-2, 6-4 to meet Victor Tuncap in the semifinals. Cepeda cruised past Tuncap 6-2, 6-2 to set up a finals berth with No. 2 seeded Christopher Cajigan, the John F. Kennedy High School freshman recently selected as the IIAAG Tennis League MVP. Both Cepeda and Cajigan held serve for the first four games before exchanging service breaks. In the tiebreaker, Cepeda blanked Cajigan 7-0 to take the set. In the second set, Cepeda and Cajigan broke each other’s serve to tie the set at 2-2, but Cepeda went on cruise control from there, winning the next four games to take the match and the highest singles division title.

In the men’s 2.0 division, unseeded Arya Rahmani steamrolled over seeded players before losing his first set of the tournament in the final against No. 3 Shane Schnabel. Rahmani, however, rallied to win the title, 4-6, 7-6, 10-7. The final of the men’s 4.5 singles will be played Friday at 4 p.m. at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort tennis courts pitting brothers Victor and Brian Tuncap.
