Team Yamaha was awarded the gold medal in baseball winning the Guam Masters Tournament defeating the Tamuning Twins 5-0 Sunday afternoon at the Leo Palace Resort.  Yamaha used great defensive field play to keep the Twins at bay throughout the game.

“Every team out there was pretty competitive. The guys pulled it off, they stepped up their game and we did it,” said Team Yamaha’s Keith Hattig.  Hattig finished the six-day tournament with seven triples at bat, two home runs, and 15 RBI’s.  “We have fun out there but we also thought we had a chance to win,” added Hattig.

Team Yamaha wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning.  An RBI by Hattig drove second baseman Peter Aguon home.  Once in the lead, Yamaha never looked back.

In the second inning, Yamaha right fielder Joe Tainatongo hit an RBI single that sent catcher Charlie Carbales home.  Roland Cruz added a run of his own off a fielder’s choice by the Twins.

Yamaha added insurance in the third inning earning two more runs totaling their score at five.  A RBI double to left field by Russ Maratita drove home Hattig.  Maratita would later score the final run for Yamaha on a stolen base home.  Lead pitcher Roland Untalan had three strikeouts in the win.

In the losing effort, the Twins did not allow any runs scored after the third inning.  They were able to get runners to third base but could not capitalize.  The Twins finish the tournament with the silver medal.

When asked about playing in future Guam Masters tournaments, Hattig simply replied, “Every year would be nice.”

The ACI Masters were awarded the bronze medal in the tournament.

Ashley Samaniego and the UCLA Bruins made it to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, before losing to eventual champions UConn.
The 2007 Simon Sanchez graduate is in his first year with the Bruins women’s basketball team as the Director of Athletic Performance. This after years at California State University, Northridge in the same capacity.
Coach Ash must be bringing some goodness to the Bruins as UCLA is currently ranked #1 in the country and earned its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
