PRESS RELEASE – The dck Masters managed to stave off a second-half comeback by Quality Distributors for a 3-2 win in Sunday’s lone full game of the 2012 Bud Light Women’s 7-A-Side Soccer League at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon.

The dck Masters’ goalkeeper Rebecca Staben dives for the ball to try to stop a shot from Quality Distributors’ Nieves Cabreza during a 2012 Bud Light Women’s 7-A-Side Soccer League match Sunday at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon. Luckily for dck, Cabreza’s shot went wide left. (courtesy photo)
It was seemingly déjà vu for Quality, entering the second half trailing and sending Paige Surber to take a penalty kick in the opening minutes of the deciding half. As she did against the Paintco Lady Strykers last week, Surber sent her shot to the back of the net. Minutes later, Surber used her speed to enter the attacking third and dribble around the last few defenders to find an opening for a shot to the opposite post. This time, teammate Vanessa Quinata scored the equalizer on the shot, sending it back to the right post to keep dck’s goalkeeper Rebecca Staben off balance.
A Quality victory just wasn’t in the plans this week, as the Masters’ Cheri Stewart later connected on an assist from teammate Christine Simard and sent her shot to the opposite post to take the lead back for her team.
The game was halted momentarily a few minutes later when a collision on the field sent one of the Masters off the field on a stretcher with an injury. When play was resumed, Quality went to work trying to score another goal, but was denied when Quinata tried to finish a similar play with Surber and sent her shot wide right. Surber tried for a follow-up shot, but the ball hit the side of the goal net. The game was called a few moments later for the dck win.
The Masters engineered the game’s first-half goals in the 19th and 20th minutes of play. Rhoda Bamba’s strike from the left side broke the scoring ice and about a minute later, Stewart connected on a pass from Jaime Fahy for the early 2-0 advantage.
In other games, the Doosan Lady Crushers scored five goals to defeat Hyundai 5-1 in a game shortened by the onset of lightning during the late afternoon downpour. Kim Sherman, who leads the league’s Golden Boot race, scored twice in the game called minutes into the second half. Andrea Odell, Kristin Thompson and Abbey Iriarte scored the other goals for the Lady Crushers. Olivia Flores scored Hyundai’s lone goal.
Guam Shipyard led 2-1 against Pika Soccer Club before the game was called in the second half.
